AFAR Travel Vanguard, desde 2016, reconoce a las organizaciones que ponen a las personas (y al planeta) en primer lugar. De casi 130 nominados este año se seleccionaron 7 homenajeados, siendo la ReD SOSTUR una de ellos. AFAR se describe como “una galardonada marca de medios de viajes que genera un impacto positivo en el mundo a través de narraciones de alta calidad que inspiran, empoderan y enriquecen a los viajeros que se preocupan por ellos”. El propósito de AFAR es ofrecer “experiencias que enriquecen personalmente al viajero, apoyan a las comunidades visitadas y son sensibles a los efectos en nuestro planeta”.

Como curiosidad, al igual que AFAR Travel Vanguard, los inicios de nuestra red se remontan al año 2016, cuando el Programa de Pequeñas Donaciones (PPD) en conjunto con La Fundación Panameña de Turismo Sostenible (APTSO), colaboraron en la creación  de la marca y primer pilotaje de la ReD SOSTUR de turismo comunitario. El PPD es un programa corporativo del Fondo de Medio Ambiente Mundial (GEF) implementado por el Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD).

La ReD SOSTUR inició con sólo 5 comunidades y hoy nos enorgullece tener 10 comunidades piloto en nuestra red colaborativa, las cuales participan actívamente para convertir a sus destinos en fuentes de ingresos para la comunidad con un enfoque sostenible y a largo plazo. Estas comunidades se capacitan constantemente para mejorar su oferta turística.

“La ReD SOSTUR busca  promover un enfoque sostenible y participativo del turismo, centrándose en el involucramiento activo de las comunidades diversas de Panamá, que a través de sus emprendimientos contribuyen significativamente a la mitigación y adaptación del cambio climático“, señala Annie Young, Presidenta de APTSO y Coordinadora de la ReD SOSTUR.

Gracias a AFAR Travel Vanguard por este reconocimiento y felicitamos a las 10 comunidades y al equipo de trabajo de la ReD SOSTUR, nuestros aliados locales e internacionales y a los donantes por este gran logro, el cual recibimos con mucho aprecio y es una motivación más para seguir trabajando con las comunidades locales para que se beneficien del turismo basado en la conservación y la regeneración de la naturaleza, a la vez que buscamos empoderar a las mujeres y a los jóvenes a participar activamente de la industria turística.

The challenges of the tourism industry are more critical than ever due to the climate change crisis, which has exposed new perspectives about the relationship between tourism, communities, and sustainable development.

The Panamanian Sustainable Tourism Foundation (APTSO.ORG), whose mission is to facilitate sustainable development in Panama through tourism, launched the SOSTUR NETWORK on August 3, 2022. A digital platform for rural communities and tourism businesses to share their vision and support the implementation of regenerative tourism strategies.

The SOSTUR network supports the strengthening and development of rural and community tourism enterprises in Panama to promote new sources of employment, value culture and contribute to the sustainability of Panama’s natural resources.

During the launch of the Network, representatives of ten pilot communities located in national park buffer zones and areas of high biological and cultural diversity presented their tourism projects to local and international agencies and provided details of how they hope to achieve successful partnerships to promote their products and services.

The Panamanian Foundation for Sustainable Tourism (APTSO), and other local and international partners have created The Panama Alliance for Community Tourism (PACTO) as a multi-year initiative to build strong and resilient communities in Panama through regenerative tourism. This goes beyond “sustainable tourism” and simply trying to minimize the negative impact of tourists. Rather, the innovative PACTO collaboration utilizes community tourism as a tool to generate new opportunities and achieve measured goals defined by local communities and indigenous groups. PACTO is a process to design and implement a regenerative National Community Tourism Strategy for Panama that delivers many of the goals outlined in the National Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism.

The APTSO team has worked with ten pilot communities, strengthening their leadership and technical skills, co-creating flagship projects, supporting community exchanges and testing new adventure alternatives to connect them with the tourism industry through the SOSTUR network. APTSO continues to support the communities with capacity building in the areas of infrastructure and tourism facilities with potential donors.

Annie Young, the President of APTSO, expressed during the launch that the SOSTUR Network seeks to promote a new and authentic way of traveling in Panama through local adventures that connect travelers with rural and indigenous groups to generate alternative income, sustain the quality of life and pride of the participating communities.
